The introduction of the technique of in vivo total body neutron activation analysis (TBNAA) has made possible the precise and accurate measurement of total body calcium (TBCa). Since almost 99 percent of TBCa is in the skeleton, TBNAA gives a direct measurement of skeletal : S.H. Cohn, K.J. Ellis, D. Vartsky, I. Zanzi, J.F. Aloia. In vivo analysis of body elements by neutron activation is an important tool in medical research. It has provided a direct quantitative measure of body composition of human beings in vivo. Basic physiological differences related to age, sex, race, and body size have been assessed by this noninvasive technique.

Neutron activation analysis involves bombarding specimens with neutrons and then measuring the resultant: gamma rays. Which of the following is a non-destructive technique for identifying and quantifying trace elements in a test sample?   We assessed TBPr in a longitudinal, observational study as height-adjusted nitrogen index (NI) using in vivo neutron activation analysis in adolescents with AN [mean ± SD age, ± y; body mass index (BMI, in kg/m 2), ± ] at the commencement of inpatient refeeding (T0), in 56 of these patients 7 mo thereafter as outpatients (T1), and in age-matched controls (C; n = 51, 15 Cited by: 2.

Neutron Activation Analysis Volume I 1st Edition by K. Heydorn (Author) ISBN Author: K. Heydorn. Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) is one of the most sensitive analytical techniques used for multi-element analysis available today. The NAA procedure is capable of providing both quantitative and qualitative results for individual elements, with sensitivities that can be superior to those possible by any other analytical technique.

Absolute measurement of whole body nitrogen by in-VIVO neutron activation analysis by David Vartsky Download PDF EPUB FB2

Whole-body nitrogen was measured in man using a new technique of neutron-activation analysis. Patients were irradiated with a small dose of fast neutrons and the capture γ rays arising from neutron interactions with nitrogen nuclei were recorded.

Sixty-five patients with various diseases have been studied on by: The prompt gamma neutron activation facility measures total body nitrogen (TBN) with an accuracy and precision of + 3% in the anthropomorphic phantom.

For the measurement of total-body calcium, sodium, chlorine, nitrogen and phosphorus by in-vivo neutron activation analysis, there are two basic requirements.

First, it is necessary to achieve a uniform neutron flux through the human subject. It is also necessary to quantitatively measure the induced radionuclides in the body. In recent years in vivo neutron activation analysis has become a practical means of determining total body calcium content in living man.
